Santorum Upends GOP Race

With Rick Santorum’s clean sweep in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado last night, it appears as though the Republican nomination fight will drag on for some time to come, possibly into the summer. Try as he might, Mitt Romney can’t seem to close the deal with the rabid conservative base of the Republican Party. He walks like a duck, quacks like a duck……But conservatives still don’t seem to think he’s a duck, a goat maybe, but not a duck. That being said, this election cycle, more so than any other in living memory, is being driven by big money and outside interest groups, two areas where Romney has a decided advantage. The longer this process drags on the more his financial and organizational muscle will bear fruit in my opinion. Ginrich, Paul and Santorum each have the ability to be major nuisances but none has a realistic shot of winning the nomination. The problem for the Republican Party is that the candidates are forming a circular firing squad which might leave a survivor in the end but one too wounded to mount a winning challenge to Obama, especially if the economy and unemployment continue to trend in a positive direction. One thing is for sure though, no matter what side of the aisle you’re on, this is great theatre and fantastic entertainment!
